Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip to Close After 34 Years in Business

The iconic Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip is set to close its doors in July after 34 years in business. The 3,000-room resort, known for its volcano attraction and tropical theme, will undergo a three-year renovation to make way for a new era.

Opened in 1989 by casino mogul Steve Wynn, the Mirage was a pioneer in the luxury resort industry on the Strip. It was the first to introduce sidewalk attractions like the volcano, inspiring other resorts like the Bellagio and Venetian to follow suit with their own unique features.

The Mirage will be rebranded as Hard Rock Las Vegas and will feature a 700-foot-tall hotel tower shaped like a guitar, similar to the brand’s property in Florida. The volcano will be demolished to make room for new rooms and amenities.

MGM Resorts, which acquired the Mirage from Wynn in 2000, sold the property to Hard Rock International for over $1 billion in 2022. More than 3,000 Mirage employees will be laid off, with Hard Rock committing to pay over $80 million in severance.

Guests with reservations beyond July 14 will be refunded, and casino chips must be used by that date or redeemed at neighboring Treasure Island for an additional 120 days. The closure of the Mirage marks the end of an era in Las Vegas, but the promise of a new and exciting chapter with Hard Rock Las Vegas on the horizon.
