Advocates warn that Clark County’s proposed street vendor regulations could jeopardize livelihoods

Street Vendors Face Uncertain Future Amid Proposed Regulations

Street vendors Humberto and Mariana, who have been selling Latino-inspired street snacks for nearly a decade in an east Las Vegas neighborhood, were recently served with a citation for conducting business on the public right of way. This marked the first time they have been cited in their years of operation, highlighting the challenges faced by street vendors in the city.

The couple, who rely on their street vending business as their sole source of income to support their twin daughters, were surprised when an agent from the Clark County Department of Business Licensing approached them and issued the citation. The violation carries a fine of $250 to $1,000 for first-time offenders, with the agent warning of potential jail time if they continued to operate in the same location.

This incident comes amidst proposed regulations that could further limit where street vendors can sell in the city. The Clark County Commission is set to consider a proposal that would establish stricter regulations on street vendors, including limiting their proximity to certain facilities and requiring various permits and licenses.

Advocates for street vendors, such as Make the Road Nevada, have raised concerns about the proposed regulations, citing potential economic impacts on vendors, especially those with limited means. They argue that the regulations could hinder the ability of street vendors to operate effectively and sustainably within the community.

While some organizations, such as the Nevada Resort Association and local chambers of commerce, have expressed support for the proposed rules, street vendors and their allies are urging commissioners to reconsider and provide more time for vendors to share their perspectives before making a decision.

Despite the potential challenges ahead, Mariana and Humberto remain determined to continue their street vending business, emphasizing the importance of providing for their families in the face of uncertain regulatory changes. Their story sheds light on the struggles faced by street vendors in Las Vegas and the ongoing debate over how to regulate this vital aspect of the city’s cultural and economic landscape.
