State Agency Accuses Las Vegas Charter School of Misusing Taxpayer Dollars, Future Uncertain

Charter School in East Las Vegas Valley Owes State Over $800,000, Future Uncertain

The future of Eagle Charter School in the east Las Vegas valley is uncertain as the school faces a daunting financial challenge. According to documents, the school owes the state more than $800,000, with accusations of misusing taxpayer dollars.

Located near Sahara and Eastern avenues, Eagle Charter School recently completed its first full year, but the State Public Charter School Authority has raised concerns about the school’s financial practices. The authority accuses the school of providing incorrect and inflated budget numbers, leading to the substantial debt owed to the Nevada Department of Education.

During a meeting on May 17, members of the State Public Charter School Authority expressed their frustration and disappointment with the situation. Tamika Shauntee Rosales emphasized the impact of one school’s financial mismanagement on the reputation of all charter schools, stating, “If we have one school that makes a mistake, especially with money, it makes it look like, ‘Oh see, all those charter schools are bad.'”

Eagle Charter School’s board members acknowledged their mistakes and vowed to implement stronger financial controls to prevent similar issues in the future. Tyrone Johnson, a member of the board, reassured the authority that administrators did not act independently in the financial decisions that led to the debt.

To address the situation, the State Public Charter School Authority announced plans to audit Eagle Charter School and its enrollment numbers on June 3. Until the debt is repaid in full, the school will not receive any per pupil-centered funding from the state.

The future of Eagle Charter School hangs in the balance as the school works to rectify its financial challenges and regain the trust of the state authorities. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
