WNBA Probes $100,000 Annual Sponsorships for Aces Players by Las Vegas Tourism Authority

WNBA Investigating Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s $100,000 Sponsorship Deal with Aces Players

The WNBA is currently investigating a $100,000 annual sponsorship deal between the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Aces players for this season and the next. While the sponsorships do not violate the league’s salary cap rules, questions have been raised about the fairness and spirit of the cap rules by other teams.

Aces coach Becky Hammon stated that the sponsorships were unique as they targeted the entire team rather than just top players. This investigation is not the first time the Aces have faced league scrutiny, as they were penalized last year for violating league rules.

The authority’s president, Steve Hill, defended the sponsorship, stating that it was done without involvement from the team and was intended to support the players and represent Las Vegas. The players expressed gratitude for the sponsorship, with rookie Kate Martin noting that it exceeded her salary.

The issue of WNBA salaries compared to NBA salaries has been highlighted recently, with top WNBA players earning significantly less than their male counterparts. The sponsorship has been seen as a positive step towards closing the pay gap and supporting WNBA players.

The WNBA has made progress in promoting pay equity, with players now receiving a larger share of the league’s revenue. The investigation into the Aces’ sponsorship deal continues, with the league aiming to ensure fairness and compliance with salary cap rules.
