From VIP Services to Children’s Books: Two Las Vegas Workers Find New Careers
Las Vegas, known for its bustling leisure and hospitality industry, is home to a significant portion of employees working in this sector. However, the stressful and unpredictable nature of these jobs, coupled with the vulnerability to economic downturns, has led many individuals to seek alternative career paths. Some have found solace in real estate, while others have opted to relocate to different cities. But for some, the path to a new career has taken a more creative turn — like writing children’s books.
One such individual is Emily Couture, who had spent years working in VIP services at prestigious establishments like the Bellagio and the original Hard Rock Hotel. When the latter underwent a transition to Virgin Hotels followed by the Covid-19 shutdown, Couture took the opportunity to reflect on her career aspirations. Inspired by a whale-watching trip from the previous year, she decided to venture into the world of children’s literature. The result was “The Bird and the Whale,” a heartwarming story about two animals from different worlds finding a bond despite their differences.
Couture’s journey into writing children’s books was driven by her desire to create stories that promote open-mindedness, acceptance, and new experiences for young readers. Opting for self-publishing, she maintained control over her intellectual property and the creative direction of her book. Similarly, David Bradley, who had worked in VIP services for Wynn Nightlife and MGM Resorts, found his calling in writing children’s books featuring his character, Big Head Bob.
Despite lacking prior experience as an author or artist, Bradley’s personal struggles and coping mechanisms inspired the character of Big Head Bob, who navigates challenges through mindfulness meditation. Through a series of books and engaging readings, Bradley has found success in his new career, with plans to expand into television and music platforms.
Both Couture and Bradley’s stories highlight the resilience and creativity of individuals seeking new paths amidst challenging circumstances. Their dedication to creating meaningful and impactful children’s literature serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling to inspire and connect with audiences of all ages.
