Indy Education Newsletter: May 2024 Recap and Updates
The Washoe County School Board is currently in the process of selecting a new superintendent, with five finalists vying for the position. The board is seeking community input through an online survey, with the results to be made public on May 8. The new superintendent is expected to start on July 1.
In other news, the City of Las Vegas is offering drivers the opportunity to pay off certain parking fines by donating school supplies. The supplies must be dropped off at the city’s Parking Services Offices within 30 days of the citation date, with a purchase receipt required. The supplies will be donated to the Public Education Foundation’s Teacher Superstore.
Meanwhile, the Washoe Education Association has endorsed two incumbents and two challengers in the upcoming school board races. The union is supporting candidates who have shown a willingness to work with educators and support public education.
In our School Spotlight, we highlight the work study program at Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory High School in North Las Vegas. The program provides students with work experience in various industries while subsidizing their tuition. Students like Evelyn Saldana have gained valuable skills and career exposure through the program.
