Las Vegas postal workers demand action following increase in violent attacks on the job

Mail Carriers Rally in Las Vegas to Raise Awareness of Rise in Violent Attacks

The safety of mail carriers has become a growing concern in Las Vegas and across the nation, as a recent rally downtown brought attention to the alarming rise in violent attacks on postal workers. Letter carriers shared their harrowing experiences, with one recalling being caught off guard during an attack, while another had a rifle pointed at him while on the job.

According to the National Association of Letter Carriers, there have been 30 attacks or robberies on mail carriers in the Las Vegas valley in the past three years, with nine incidents targeting carriers from the same post office in East Las Vegas. Nationally, over 2,000 letter carriers have been robbed or assaulted since 2020, prompting calls for change.

NALC National President Brian Renfroe spoke at the rally, advocating for the passage of the federal ‘Protect Our Letter Carriers Act,’ which aims to improve technology and increase prosecution for crimes against postal workers. The bipartisan legislation addresses issues such as collection boxes requiring arrow keys, which make carriers vulnerable to robberies.

The goal of the rally was to raise awareness and find solutions to ensure the safety of mail carriers, who play a vital role in serving the community. With ongoing attacks posing a threat to their well-being, postal workers are calling for action to protect themselves and continue their work without fear.
